Romania’s Ministry of Energy has reached two additional milestones under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) related to battery storage capacities and photovoltaic panel production.

“Romania has made energy storage the top priority of the national energy system,” stated Energy Minister, Sebastian Burduja. “Through the contracts signed today under the PNRR, we will already meet 20 per cent of the country’s storage needs. Additionally, with the 33 million euros in non-refundable funds allocated for the photovoltaic panel factory in Bârlad, we are kickstarting the revitalisation of Romanian industry in the context of the energy transition.”

The newly-signed five projects will add a total battery storage capacity of 791.48 megawatt-hours (MWh). The projects are supported by over 30 million euros in non-reimbursable funding from the PNRR.

“Ensuring that the energy system can handle peak demand is essential for maintaining system stability and for using green energy from solar and wind farms, even when the sun isn’t shining or the wind isn’t blowing,” added the Minister. “The more megawatts we add in renewable and intermittent energy production, the greater the need for storage. These investments will lead to lower energy bills for Romanian households and businesses in the years ahead.”
